Microwave Dave Day History
For over thirty years, Microwave Dave Gallaher has played an important part in the musical and educational scene in Huntsville, Alabama. He is an internationally acclaimed recording and performing blues artist, as both a solo act and as frontman for Microwave Dave and The Nukes. The current band lineup includes Dave, longtime bassist Rick Godfrey and drummer James Alan Irvin.
On May 26th, 2015, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle officially proclaimed June 28, 2015 “Microwave Dave Day.” A concert was held to honor Dave for his ongoing social, educational, and musical contributions to the community, and to announce the formation of a music education project: The Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation. Dave received a key to the city during the event. Since then, an annual celebration has been held on the last Sunday in June in Huntsville, Alabama, moving to October in 2021.
Microwave Dave Day is a family friendly event and continues to feature performances from the areas finest local musicians, including Microwave Dave and The Nukes. A major highlight of the event is the selection and recognition of a Local Musician and a Music Educator for their contributions to music education in North Alabama. Proceeds from Microwave Dave Day fund the 501(C)(3) Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation, whose mission is to enhance the quality of life in our community through music education.
